Identifying Fake Crystals: Will crystal always be cold?

Identifying Fake Crystals: Will crystal always be cold?

how to identify fake crystals

Have you been on TikTok lately? There are tons of videos describing ways you can tell if your crystal is real or fake. Some of these videos are amazing, and they provide incredibly helpful information. Others, not so much.

There is a lot of misinformation out there on crystaltok, so it can be quite confusing! If your crystal doesn't melt an ice cube, is it fake? The answer is no. I A crystals ability to melt an ice cube does not tell you anything about authenticity. Let's throw this "test" out once and for all.

If my crystal isn't cold, does it mean it's fake? No, not necessarily.

There are some great ways to tell if your crystal is real, but it's important to really understand them and weed out the myths!

If my crystal isn't cold, is it fake?

Generally speaking, crystals are cooler to the touch. A piece of plastic or glass will sit at a warmer temperature than an authentic crystal. So, many blogs (including this one) will tell you to touch your crystal. If it feels cooler to touch, it's probably real.

But, what if it doesn't? What if you've been wearing your crystal all day and it's warm to touch? Is it fake?

The answer is no.

Crystals are not refrigerators. Though they generally feel cooler to touch, they will warm up in a hot room, or when worn on the body.

If you are meditating and holding your crystal in your palm for 15-20 minutes, it will definitely absorb some of that beautiful body heat you're radiating, and will no longer be cool to touch.

But, if you're picking up your crystal from your nightstand table in a room temperature environment, you will probably notice it feels a bit cool to the touch.

The best way to tell if your crystal is real? Use the Moh's hardness scale test - basically, a scratch test.  This will be tough if you have a tumbled crystal, but it's an easy way to test a rough or point. You can find more information in our other blog post here.

Here are some other ways to tell if your crystal is real or fake:

1. A fake crystal will have air bubbles.

2. It will feel heavier than plastic or glass.

3. The colour is too vibrant (it may be dyed).

4. The price is too good to be true (a massive piece of malachite for $3....impossible!)
